The article “Quality improvement in healthcare: The need for valid, reliable and efficient methods and indicators” was selected because of its relevance on the topic. It discusses the need to improve quality in healthcare to reduce adverse effects (AE). These are negative repercussions that occur to patients, medical professionals, or the healthcare system due to poor quality of care globally. The article is also useful because it was written in 2019. Since it was written two years ago, it contains time-relevant information on the issue under discussion. Finally, the article because is contained in the International Journal for Quality in Health Care, which is a trusted journal that has the latest scholarly articles on healthcare.

There are numerous reasons for improving the quality of healthcare services. The main motive for pursuing better outcomes and practices is to enhance patients’ safety. Poor quality care is closely related to poor safety of patients. For instance, when healthcare providers are not equipped to serve patients well, the patients are more likely to suffer from issues such as suffering, pain, and loss of autonomy (Islam & Li, 2019). Additionally, the quality of care that a patient receives affects their health outcomes, including patient experience, timeliness of care, and effectiveness of care. Poor-quality healthcare is associated with negative patient outcomes and readmissions that follow them. Hence, it is important to pay attention to healthcare quality to ensure the safety of patients and provide them with better treatment.

Enhancing quality should also be a priority because adverse events caused by poor healthcare are costly to the system. AE force patients to stay in hospitals longer than necessary (Islam & Li, 2019). Prolonged hospital stays are an unwanted expense to the healthcare system. Another way in which poor quality healthcare is expensive is through costs incurred in litigation (Islam & Li, 2019). When healthcare providers dispense care that does not meet patient standards, they can face legal action. This makes professionals, hospitals, and healthcare organizations incur the expenses of litigation and settling negligence suits. To reduce the cost of care, the relevant authorities should strive to upgrade the quality of healthcare services.

The article also explains that there is a need to improve quality in healthcare to combat public health issues such as maternal care. Maternal and child mortality rates remain extremely high despite the measures to reduce them. However, research shows that antenatal care is pivotal to improving care for pregnant women, reducing pregnancy complications, and improving the health of newborn babies (Islam & Li, 2019). Improving antenatal care requires adequate training of medical professionals and strong systems to ensure proper implementation. Thus, it is necessary to boost the quality of services to reduce public health concerns such as maternal deaths.

The quality of care is a pertinent issue in the healthcare sector today. Patient satisfaction is prioritized in provision of care, and the patient-centered model is widely used to achieve this goal. Striving for continuous quality improvement ensures the safety and satisfaction of patients. In addition, as healthcare costs are skyrocketing every year, any changes that reduce these costs are embraced. As discussed in the article, quality improvement reduces the economic burden of adverse effects. Finally, it is necessary to improve care to address issues such as maternal mortality and morbidity. Overall, the article is relevant in explaining why healthcare quality is important from health, economic, and social perspectives.
