The concept of salvation in Jesus Christ presents central importance for all Christians acting as the ultimate goal of human religious efforts and the highest gift from God. This event occupies the central proclamation in all Epistles of the Apostles and is repeatedly mentioned in the Old Testament, both openly and figuratively. Jesus’s amazing birth, His sinless life, His painful death, and His glorious resurrection, which is the pledge of our salvation, are thoroughly described in the first four books of the New Testament. Thus, this paper aims to outline the theme of salvation in Jesus Christ, namely its nature and how it is accomplished, and give obvious examples in the Old Testament indicating Jesus Christ and His deeds.

As a theological concept, redemption is the exercise of God’s love for people through the deliverance of a person from sin and its effects, such as pain, death, and hell. This concept derives from the famous story about the fall of the first people, Adam and Eve, which is told in the opening chapters of Genesis. At first, God created people as sinless and perfect creatures, but deceived by Satan, they violated God’s will and fell into sin. As a result, they began to endure various sorrows, get sick, and die. Moreover, original sin distorted the primordial human nature, consequences of which are the obscuration of mind, the inclination of the will to evil more than to good, and the perversion of God’s image in man.

Due to His endless love, God incarnated in the Person of Jesus Christ who assumed all people’s sins, died for them, and then rose from the dead, thereby releasing man from the curse. Christ was not partaker of and responsible for original sin because He chose a dispassionate way of birth, that is, through the Holy Spirit and Virgin. In this regard, Christ’s soul was free from the consequences of original sin, but His body perceived blameless passions, namely hunger, thirst, labor, fatigue, instincts, including fear of death, and mortality. Concerning this, Apostle Paul states, “A high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (New International Version, n.d., Hebrews 4:15). Christ voluntarily accepted a mortal human nature to be able to die for our sins.

Salvation is always a two-way action that is executed both through the action of God’s special grace on an individual and the manifestation of the person’s active faith embedded in the freedom to choose. In particular, people cannot save himself, but “everything is possible for God” (New International Version, n.d., Matthew 19:26). Therefore, in his sermon, Apostle Paul focuses on faith as a means of salvation: “for by grace have ye been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God” (New Internationa Version, n.d., Ephesians 2:8). Therefore, individuals should realize and remember that without God’s assistance, mercy, and direct participation in their lives, they cannot gain eternal life and receive healing for their damaged nature.

On the other hand, salvation requires a definite direction of will from an individual, which should be accompanied by a change in lifestyle. In this regard, the Gospel’s key words about salvation are: “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned” (New International Version, n.d., Mark 16:16). Herewith, baptism is not only a common rite of immersion in water, “but the interrogation of a good conscience toward God” (New International Version, n.d., 1 Peter 3:21). This means that faith should be raised through saving deeds in faith, without which it is dead or uncompleted. Fundamental Christian affairs are the study of Holy Scripture (1 Timothy 2: 4), prayer (Acts 2:21), repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10), verbal testimony of the faith (Romans 10: 9-10), mercy, and hope in God.

Finally, it is worth mentioning how the Old Testament sacrificial system indicates the person and value of Jesus Christ. The most evident example is a remarkable and unique story about Isaac’s offering and his return to Abraham, which can be seen in Genesis 22, 1-18. The story narrates how God tempted Abraham’s faith by asking him to sacrifice his only-begotten son whom Abraham loved overwhelmingly and in whom he had God’s promise. With sorrow in heart, he obeyed and lifted a knife against his son. However, at the last moment, God stopped Abraham and ordered not to kill Isaac, eventually blessing him. In this regard, the text has explicit references to Jesus as Heavenly Father’s only begotten and beloved Son and His substitutionary oblation. Moreover, the Apostle Paul interprets this passage in the following manner: “Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death” (New International Version, n.d., Hebrews, 11:19, NIV). Hence, Isaac’s sacrifice can also allude to the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

In summary, the paper has outlined the theme of salvation in Jesus Christ, namely its nature and how it is accomplished given obvious examples in the Old Testament indicating Jesus Christ and His deeds. In particular, due to invaluable Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, people have the real opportunity to gain the cure of their depraved nature and the freedom from the damnation of sin. The central point is that an individual should realize infirmity and the inability to heal oneself alone, invoke God’s help, and express the resolute desire to follow His commandments.
